A website is basically a computer programme and has to physically reside on disk space somewhere. Some developers use their own pc's to host customers' websites to save money. This is generally a bad idea as the pc and access speed is unlikely to be fast enough resulting in slow response.
I use a professional website hosting company with industrial class webservers and high speed access lines ensuring a fast response for anyone navigating your website. Nothing puts people off a website faster than poor response.
The first thing you need for a website is a name i.e. the www.mybizname.co.uk. You can pretty much choose whatever name you like providing someone else has not already registered it. Once you have decided on a name I will take care of registering it for you and renewing it (required every 2 years). If you already have a name registered for you by another company I can organise the transfer.
Most people want to use email with their domain names too e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org. Management of email addresses is included in the standard hosting charge (unless you are using Microsoft SBS).
